My nationality

Someone asked the other day what "nationality" I am?

I responded with "American".

He seemed offended and said, "Oh, you're gonna go there.".

So I hastily said "3rd generation born on American soil, American."

It didn't seem to help. He then wanted to know "where are your people from?"

I said, "My people are all American too."

He threw his hands up in obvious frustration and stopped asking.

People!

Why are all these labels so important to everyone? I'm not even comfortable saying I'm American. I don't like the idea of being owned by any government.

Can't we all just be human? And leave off any extra labeling? Why do governments own us? Why do we have to declare 'Nationality'? Aren't we evolved enough yet?
