I Remember - Red Patent Leather Shoes

It was the first Saturday of September in Stockton, California. The sun was so hot that I thought it might melt the sidewalks.

My dad had the weekend off from work and said that he needed to go to the Family General store to pick up a few things. He asked if I wanted to go along for the ride?

Of course, I said yes. Mostly because it was my dad and I would go anywhere with him. But, partly because I loved looking around the Family General Store.

We headed down to the store and my dad parked on the curb right in front. He came around the car to let me out of the front seat, and as soon as my feet hit the ground, I saw them.

Right there in the window in front of me was the most beautiful pair of red shiny patent leather shoes that I had ever seen! I wanted them so badly, but I played it cool.

I noticed my dad see me looking at them and I smiled at him and hopped on out of the car and waited for him to close the door and lead the way into the store.

I quietly followed him around while he did his shopping. And when he was done, he took his things to the counter.

He and the storekeeper started exchanging how are the wives and all, as I stood by and waited. My eyes wandered to the window display often while I waited.

Dad finished paying, loaded his big brown paper bags into his arms, and headed for the door. I followed quietly along behind him.

Just as he got to the shop door, he paused and looked over at the window. Then he looked down at me and said 'Those sure are some pretty red shoes in the window!', smiling.

I smiled back and nodded vigorously. My birthday was just two weeks away. I could hope.
